Course → Module 5: Link Building for Entity Reinforcement
Session 1 of 7

The traditional view of links is that they pass PageRank and help pages rank higher. That view is not wrong, but it is incomplete. At the entity level, links do something more specific: they create relationship signals between entities. A link from an SEO industry blog to your entity SEO article says "these two entities are related in the SEO topic space." A link from a random coupon site says nothing about your entity.

In Layer 2, every link you pursue should answer one question: does this link reinforce the entity associations I am trying to build?

Two Views of Links

Aspect Traditional Link View Entity Link View
Primary metric Domain Authority / PageRank Topical relevance to your entity
Success measure Number of links acquired Strength of entity associations built
Ideal source Any high-authority domain Authority domain in your entity neighborhood
Anchor text goal Keyword-optimized Entity name + topical association
Context importance Moderate (any link helps) Critical (context defines the relationship)
Off-topic high-DA link Still valuable Minimal entity signal value

How Links Create Entity Relationships

When a link exists between two pages, search engines evaluate the relationship it implies. The evaluation considers three factors: the topical context of the linking page, the authority of the linking domain, and the content surrounding the link.

The Entity Relevance Score

When evaluating a link opportunity, apply this simple scoring framework:

  1. Domain topical alignment (0-3): Is the linking domain in your entity neighborhood? A niche industry blog scores 3. A general news site scores 1-2. A random unrelated site scores 0.
  2. Page topical alignment (0-3): Is the specific page about your topic? A page specifically about entity SEO scores 3. A general marketing page scores 1-2. A page about cooking scores 0.
  3. Anchor text signal (0-2): Does the anchor text associate your entity with your topic? Brand + topic scores 2. Brand only scores 1. Generic ("click here") scores 0.
  4. Surrounding context (0-2): Does the paragraph around the link discuss your topic? Rich topical context scores 2. Thin context scores 1. No relevant context scores 0.

Maximum score: 10. Prioritize links scoring 7 or higher. Links scoring below 4 provide minimal entity signal value regardless of domain authority.

A link from a DR 40 site that scores 9/10 on entity relevance builds more entity recognition than a link from a DR 90 site that scores 3/10. Authority matters, but relevance defines the relationship.

Assignment

Audit your top 20 backlinks using the Entity Relevance Score framework.

  1. Export your top 20 backlinks from Ahrefs, Moz, Google Search Console, or manually identify them
  2. For each link, score: Domain Topical Alignment (0-3), Page Topical Alignment (0-3), Anchor Text Signal (0-2), Surrounding Context (0-2)
  3. Calculate the total Entity Relevance Score (out of 10) for each link
  4. Identify which links score 7+ (strong entity signals) and which score below 4 (weak or irrelevant)
  5. Based on this analysis, list 5 link opportunities that would score 7+ on entity relevance, and outline how you would pursue them
